High Billinghurst Farm Wedding Photography
The Persistent Drive for Consistency
THE BREAKDOWN:
Wedding Location: High Billinghurst Farm, Godalming, Surrey
In Brief: Love, mist, rustic barns and obstacle courses at High Billinghurst Farm.
“Consistency is a paradox. By striving to achieve it you don’t stay the same, you get better.”
It’s a brand new year and it’s that time of the season where we are examining our images from the previous year, finding our favourites and discussing how we can progress as photographers for the upcoming season. We love the start of the year; planning for the coming months whilst pondering the unknown possibilities and opportunities that might arise and challenging ourselves, once again, to take our favourite ever photograph. That rush and thrill has kept us going for over sixteen years now and the search for the perfect photograph starts again in February when our wedding season begins.
Something that we also continuously try to improve upon is consistency. These blog pages represent a (relatively) short, carefully curated collection of some of our favourite images from each wedding; photographs that we are truly proud to show and that are selected with a specific story in mind. But our mission is that every single image we take through every part of every wedding should be worthy of a prominent place within these pages. The challenge is not to make that curation easier each year with a handful of clear “winning images”, but to make it impossible; to be able to fight strongly for the place of every photograph and the thought process that went into it.
That goal for consistency applies not only to the quality of each image but to the feel, the tone, the colour palette and composition. Each image should work on its own but also slot seamlessly into a collection; whether that be a blog post, an album, a full wedding gallery or even an instagram feed from a hundred different occasions. Each image should be a brand new original creation but should never feel out of place because the goal is that each should really belong to the very same collection: A collection of the best photographs we’ve ever taken. That goal is of course highly subjective and likely impossible, but the drive to achieve it is, nonetheless, compelling.
When the lovely Sophie & Chris chose the images for their album it didn’t look like this blog post. The journey they took through their wedding with their selections was different from the one we share here. Yet we enjoyed their curation every bit as much as our own. That fact makes us incredibly happy – if the story of the wedding can be told through multiple different frames that somehow still belong side by side then maybe we achieved some level of the consistency we strive for.
Or maybe when photographing this amazing pair and their wonderful gathering of true characters in the stunning setting of High Billinghurst Farm, it’s just impossible to capture anything but consistent joy in every frame.
Here’s one journey through the many stories and connections that together make up Sophie & Chris’s High Billinghurst Farm Celebration.
