Warmth, Canvas & Firelight: Capturing the Soul of the Tent.

Tipi Wedding Photography by York Place Studios

Beneath the Canvas
There is a distinct atmosphere inside a tipi that you don't get in any other venue. It’s the slope of the canvas, the smell of the woodsmoke, and the way the space naturally pulls everyone towards the fire in the centre. It creates an immediate sense of togetherness that feels ancient and cozy.
Photographically, tipis are all about warmth and layers. We love working with the unique geometry of the poles and the canvas to frame your guests. We capture the huddled conversations by the fire pit and the riotous energy on the dancefloor, using the structure itself to tell the story.

Cinematic Light in Dark Spaces

Let's be honest: Tipis are a lighting challenge. The canvas absorbs light, and once the sun goes down, it gets dark. Really dark.

Many photographers try to fix this by flooding the tent with flash, which instantly kills that cozy, warm atmosphere you booked the venue for. We take a different approach.

We embrace the darkness. We use the glow of the fire pits, the twinkle of the fairy lights, and the ambient warmth of the scene to create moody, cinematic images. We have the technical expertise (and the lenses) to see in the dark, preserving the true feeling of your night.
Watch the slideshow to see how we captured the sometimes challenging lighting conditions of a Tipi at Kate & Joe's beautiful Norfolk wedding.

Relaxed, documentary photography & films for the most informal of wedding settings

There's nothing that breaks the traditional formality associated with weddings than the site of a Teepee pitched in scenic surrounds. It's an instant mood-setter;  a focal point to build the atmosphere around, and there's little we love more than capturing raw atmosphere in our photographs and films. To us it's not just about the big set pieces, it's about capturing the small, hidden moments, and for that, the more relaxed those around us are, the more creative we can be.
As a family team that know each other's moves backwards and each shooting in a unified unposed, documentary style, our approach is simply to blend into your day and let everyone more or less forget we're there. No directing the action, no crowding you or your guests, just genuine emotion, heartfelt laughter and real friendship and relationships creatively captured in photo & film.
Nothing posed, nothing staged, stay in the moment.
Like what you see?
If you're currently planning your wedding beneath the canvas we'd love to talk and see if we could be the right fit for your photography or video.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not with us. We color-grade our images carefully to handle the “orange wash” of the canvas. We embrace the warmth (because that’s the vibe you booked!) but ensure skin tones look natural and the images remain sharp and cinematic, not muddy.

Tipi dancefloors are tight and energetic! We use wide-angle lenses and get right in the middle of the crowd to capture the unfiltered energy and pure joy of the party from the inside out.

Yes, the setting is a key part of the story. We capture the tipis from the outside—especially when they are glowing against the night sky—but we always look to incorporate the landscape, the weather, or the guests to show the true scale and atmosphere of the celebration, rather than just taking a standard ‘venue photo’.

The “huddled” atmosphere of a rain-lashed tipi is actually fantastic for photography. It forces everyone closer together, increasing the volume of laughter and conversation. We are happy to shoot through the raindrops or stay inside capturing the intense atmosphere.

Canvas walls don’t block wind noise well, and PA systems can struggle in the cone shape. We use individual microphones on your speakers to ensure that even if the wind is howling outside, your speeches are crystal clear on film.

Yes. Tipis are often pitched in unique, off-grid locations. We are used to working without standard power supplies or amenities and love the adventure of a hidden location.
