The Push To Make Better Art
THE BREAKDOWN:
Wedding Location: Chelsea Physic Garden, London
In Brief: Discussing new challenges and a fun, colourful and bubble-filled wedding in the beautiful surroundings of Chelsea Physic Garden.
Last week we launched a new brand. Incredibly it’s been 17 years (next month) since we last did that, and in that time York Place Studios has grown into something that we never expected. We have spoken about our ideas in countries as far-flung as Mexico, Bali and Poland to name just a few and have photographed weddings all around the world. We love documentary photography more than ever and feel so privileged to be able to spend our time taking photographs and writing and speaking about our absolute favourite subject. In fact, we have even bigger plans for York Place Studios next year which we are excited to share very soon!
Our new additional brand though is a way to explore an entirely different type of photography for us. Kaleid.me is a studio portrait photography business and is about capturing colourful, characterful portraits that are uniquely you. At first glance, it could not be any more different from York Place. However, if you look more closely, whether we’re taking images posed in the studio or completely non-posed documentary images at weddings or on the street, our aim is always simply to create photographs about people and personalities and to tell stories that reveal something about the individuals in front of us. The challenges and some of the techniques may be different but whichever genre we work in the theme is always the same.
It is important to us to always continue to challenge ourselves and (whilst York Place remains documentary-led), just as street photography influenced our wedding work, we find that ideas and perspectives activated in a new and different field can often be brought back into YPS and help develop us as photographers. Growing, learning, expanding and seeking understanding is so, so important. Our work is continually evolving and developing and we couldn’t be prouder that after nearly 17 years in the industry we still continue to push ourselves out of our comfort zone and challenge ourselves as photographers to make better art.
Speaking of art, Charlie and Lucy’s wedding was a photographer’s dream. Colourful and spontaneous, fun and silly, whilst remaining emotional and real, we absolutely loved every second. The wedding all took place at Chelsea Physic Garden which proved to be a truly beautiful spot for a wedding. The girls had thought of everything; the multi-coloured flowers, the bubble guns (which the children absolutely loved!) and, when it rained (which did nothing but enhance the fun and photography), the girls had supplied a huge range of colourful umbrellas that, if anything, enhanced the photographic opportunities by further bringing out the chaotic, raw and real spontaneity that we truly love.
Here is a glimpse into this bubble-filled, colour-centric and delightful day.
