Alpheton Barns Wedding Photography
Informal Wedding Photography and Familial Affinity
THE BREAKDOWN:
Wedding Location: Alpheton Barns, Surrey, UK
In Brief: Easygoing, informal wedding with a close sense of family and community and a beautiful Surrey Barn setting.
“Photographing a wedding is not just about showing how it looked, it’s about trying to capture the essence of how it felt to be there.”
Whenever we come to write a blog post and look back on a wedding we’re always curious what will, with the benefit of time, stand out to us from the day. Taking a photograph is as much about feeling as it is about visuals and when we see the photographs we are reminded of the fleeting thoughts that entered our minds in that fraction of a second. What was the idea behind the photograph? What moved us to press the shutter? How did that scene make us feel and what were we looking to achieve?Â
It’s curious how often themes emerge; how clear connections between seemingly disparate stories begin to present themselves in the photographs that were not necessarily so apparent on the day. Each photograph is carefully, individually considered yet the theme is unconscious; it comes not from any preconceived notion but from our immersion, from our participation in the day. Style and technique are repeatable, they can be achieved through analytical thought, but the feeling behind a moment can come only through our understanding of the people around us and the atmosphere they create.
In the case of Jen & Josh we were almost inevitably drawn towards the joviality of the warm, family relationships this amazing pair clearly inspired. Even preparing separately for the day, something about the family mannerisms and interactions led us immediately but unconsciously towards a light-hearted rendition of their story that followed through the day. Chocolate on the children’s faces mirrored by white moisturiser on those of the adults. Irresistible, impulsive embraces during the ceremony, laughter through the vows. Quizzical looks and knowing glances; idiosyncrasies, inside jokes, charisma and chaos. These are characterful qualities that we are inspired to capture but cannot create. The photographic themes emerge not from our minds, nor even from theirs. They are found through the unconscious acts and connections of the people around us; our job is not only to see but to feel.
We hope that these photographs carry the energy of Jen & Josh’s wonderful Suffolk wedding at the gorgeous Alpheton Barns.
