ISLINGTON TOWN HALL WEDDINGS - BEAUTIFUL, ELEGANT SIMPLICITY TO LET YOUR PERSONALITIES SHINE.

The perfect playroom for the documentary wedding photographer ...
For those seeking a simple, unfussy wedding ceremony, registry offices often have great appeal. Simplicity, though, sometimes comes at a price, with some registry offices perhaps focussing on function over style. Thankfully, this couldn't be further from the case with the stunning, listed, Islington Town Hall - a beautiful historic building suited for any style of ceremony in one of London's most vibrant districts.

With a spacious piazza for your guests to gather in front of the beautiful facade of the building, the venue feels like an immediately elegant setting. Directly opposite are some lovely bars, cafes and restaurants which also make great meeting spots before the ceremony begins.
Boasting seven different spaces for wedding ceremonies, every room feels stylish and elegant, catering for different styles and scales of wedding. Starting from the most basic of options of simply signing the paperwork only in the statutory room, through the Angel and Canonbury Suites for intimate witness-only ceremonies, to the popular pet-friendly 20 guest mid-century Room 99 (complete with live-stream facilities) or the 60 guest art deco Richmond suite the venue scales up with your needs. The showpiece of the venue though is undoubtedly the Council Chambers (85 guests at weekends, 50 on weekdays.) With the original round layout and historic features creating a unique talking point and stunning setting for any wedding, no matter whether simplicity or style is your priority.

LET'S TALK

About the venue - Islington Town Hall

Whilst Islington Town Hall caters solely for the ceremony part of your day rather than the reception, its convenient location (with space outside for those beautiful chatered vintage red London buses to stop) makes it a great starting point for the day. Islington itself is full of amazing reception venues with plenty of character, from beautiful private-hire pubs to arty warehouses, quirky restaurants, adapted buildings and, of course, your usual London range of great hotels and event spaces, many of which are within easy walking distance.

When you arrive at the Town Hall itself guests typically gather on the little piazza area outside and, with guests mingling and the vibrant street life surrounding you, this is one of our favourite places in London to take photographs. Our particular style of unposed, documentary photography is inspired by street photography and we love the cool street vibes that this space creates.

At the entrance to the venue are a series of wide steps which, for most of our weddings is where the confetti line typically takes place. Having that variance of height (and seemingly its own little microclimate of wind movements!) makes for an epic confetti shot and is also a great place for groups either before or after the ceremony if you choose to have them.

Inside you're greeted by a beautiful foyer and another, rather grand marble staircase leading to the ceremony rooms, with the stunning council chambers, the venue's largest venue, right at the top of the stairs. One lovely feature is that, although you may not be able to have the reception at the Town Hall, you can hire one of the smaller rooms as a greeting space - an option many of our couples have taken up so that everyone can say hello and be entertained whilst the happy couple have their pre-wedding interviews with the registrars.

Having photographed and filmed a number of weddings at Islington Town Hall we have always found the staff and registrars to be warm and friendly and keen to make your day feel special. Town Hall's and registry offices often have a rapid turnaround of multiple weddings a day and it's easy for registrars to feel jaded, but we've found the Islington Town Hall staff to always be kind and professional.

Each of the ceremony rooms has its own unique character and non feel like a compromise, whether you're going for a tiny, intimate celebration or have a larger guest list in the truly beautiful council chamber. All have plenty of opportunities for nice photographic background and feel warm and inviting for your guests.

Dom, Liam and Matt were so nice to communicate with, and during the day just blended in with our guests. So many of our guests enquired about them, mentioning how professional they were throughout. The result is phenomenal. We can re-experience our special day and find what people were up to throughout. The most difficult task is to choose which of the nearly 1,000 pics we should print as each and every picture is special in its way. We cannot recommend York Place Studios enough, anyone who’ll have them on their wedding is lucky.
We absolutely adore the photos that Dom and Liam took at our London town hall and pub wedding in October, and loved having them there as part of our day. Since the slideshow and gallery were sent through we can't stop looking at them, it's incredible how well the photos document the day. They captured all the unscripted moments so perfectly, and all of our guests have commented on how the photos give such a good feel for how it felt to be there. It makes me feel really emotional looking at them, each one is so filled with love and joy and drunken fun.

Relaxed, informal, unfussy - why documentary photography naturally suits a town hall wedding.

If the appeal of a town hall or registry office wedding is to keep things simple, then documentary style wedding photography truly is the perfect fit.
Whilst all photographers generally avoid interfering in the action during the ceremony, the documentary's entirely free-flowing and spontaneous approach means that you never have to worry about where your photographer is or how you're going to look in the photographs - it's our job to make you look great without you even knowing it.
Town Hall's are often busy environments and Islington is no exception. People are moving in and out, other couples will be simultaneously celebrating their own wedding - it's fast-moving, spontaneous and even a little chaotic - in other words the perfect environment for us, as documentary/reportage photographers, to thrive.
Whilst Islington Town Hall has a lovely area out front to gather, it's not a private zone with beautiful backdrops, it's an environment that has its own beauty that must be embraced. To get the most out of the venue you need photographers that work moment to moment and embrace what's in front of them rather than try to recreate preconcieved shots and compositions.

As documentary photographers we don't need to take up any of your time in this fast-moving environment - everything is relaxed and completely informal. We won't ask you to stand anywhere or play up to the camera, (though we're of course happy to do one or two groups and portraits on request), we will just let the action unfold, allow you to greet your guests, be excited and in the moment and capture it all in the most creative and unexpected ways.

"Sometimes a wedding isn't the serene, elegant scenes you see in all the movies, sometimes it's fast-moving and somewhat chaotic. But there's real beauty in that, there's authenticity; personalities reveal themselves and it's even often funny. Those, to us, are the most beautiful moments you could ever have as a record of your day."
