MATT & KATE // HOLMES MILL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Wow. What a whirlwind few weeks it’s been! If back when we started out in our little studio in Scarborough you’d have told us we’d have just spent a month travelling straight from Barcelona to Warsaw to Birmingham to give talks at photography events about our work before returning to the UK to meet two photographers who had flown in from Spain specifically to learn from us we would absolutely never have believed it! We’re also extremely excited to now be able to announce that we will also be speaking at Elevate conference next year… more on that soon!

Speaking of unpredictability, for us one of the real joys of a wedding is in the unknown. However well-planned a wedding might be we find it’s always the unplanned parts where the magic happens. We talk a little bit about those amazing, impossible-to-predict moments in our new ‘Best of’ Video which you can view here > www.yorkplacestudios.co.uk/york-place-studios-in-conversation/ Harnessing and capturing the unpredictability of the moment without the need to slow it down or direct the situation is something that we personally relish on a wedding day and something that we enjoy teaching in our workshop and mentoring sessions (for more information on this click here!).

Kate and Matt’s wedding at Holmes Mill in Lancashire was full of these kinds of moments. The backdrop was perfect: an old textile mill bathed in natural light and full of interesting industrial features and fantastic reclaimed cinema seating to keep children and adults alike entertained! The pièce de résistance of this industrious setting was the drinks reception at the Boiler House, full of original mechanics, exposed beams, period character and a huge 1910 cross-beam in the centre. Add to all this plenty of children running around (bundles of joy and excellent sources for spontaneity!) and so many little moments between the adults and we quickly realised this was a pretty special venue and a pretty extraordinary wedding with lots of opportunities to create the characterful, layered and spontaneous images that we love and are known for.

Below are just a few of our favourite spontaneous, unpredictable photographs. Not directed. Not posed. Just real moments.
