Documentary Wedding Photographers / London Street Photographers

The York Place team are best known as documentary wedding photographers and filmmakers, but in truth the style that we created (whilst still under the unposed-documentary umbrella) is perhaps closer to street photography.

At York Place we believe that creativity is everything. We don't believe in the boundaries of genre, we never bow to what's been done before, our goal is simply to take great photographs and make great films. So in honing our style we didn't look at other examples of wedding photography, we hit the streets of London and other great cities around the world and practiced street photography - the art of finding big stories in everyday scenes.

It's no coincidence that London is now our most visited location for weddings - the style we created is born of the city's streets and inspired by the people who make this great city what it is.

CHOOSING OUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS WAS THE EASIEST TASK WE HAD. WE BOTH AGREED WE DIDN’T WANT THE “CONVENTIONAL-PEOPLE-SMILING-TO-THE-CAMERA” KIND OF PICTURES, WE WANTED TO CAPTURE THE WEDDING, THE MOMENT, AS THEY WERE. OPENING HUNDREDS OF TABS REVEALED MORE AND MORE OF THE SAME UNTIL WE SAW YORK PLACE STUDIOS – IMMEDIATELY WE STOPPED AND SAID THIS IS IT. THE PHOTOS ON THEIR WEBSITE WERE SO MESMERISING, WE WANTED TO FRAME THEM WITHOUT KNOWING THE PEOPLE, AND THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRADITIONAL WEDDING PICTURES TO THE ART THEY BRING.

How we work
At the core of our beliefs as photographers is the principle that your wedding should never feel like a photoshoot. We don't want to keep you from your guests, we don't want you to feel like you need to pose and smile for the camera or schedule when to tie your tie or worry about finding time for the next photograph. As far as you as a couple are concerned, our approach couldn't be more simple - we want you to just forget we're even there.

For us, of course, it's not quite as simple as that. Whilst you relax and enjoy your day we'll be using every second of nearly two decades of experience and working non-stop to create exciting compositions and uncover beautiful moments, whether they be emotional, comedic or simply revealing of some small aspect of personality. Our style relies on capturing unpredictable, spontaneous actions, but our approach, techniques and artistic expertise ensure that luck is taken out of the equation.

Whilst our experience and techniques guide us, our aim is never to recreate something we've done before. We love what we do because each time we take a photograph we're striving to create something that excites us every bit as much as we hope it will excite you. We don't try to take great "wedding photographs", we aim to take great photographs in general - images that would be interesting to someone who doesn't know the people in the frame or has no direct interest in weddings. And if someone outside of the wedding can feel a connection with the image then imagine how strong that feeling will be when the people in the photograph are the people that you know and love.

How we work
When you watch your wedding film we want to put you right there, in the moment. The way it looked, the way it felt, the joy and emotion of being surrounded by everyone you know and love, all in the same room at the same time and ready to celebrate.

To put you back in that place we want to celebrate the wedding just the way it was - the daft moments as well as the emotional ones. The tiny connections between guests as well as the moments that bring you together in marriage. Our fillms are not about slow-motion walks through fields, they're about celebrating everything that made your wedding truly the best day of your lives.

To place you back in that moment we want your film to feel like a guest's perspective of the day. We use small, discrete (but top quality!) equipment to get right into the heart of the action - not looking in from the outside but being part of the community around us. We won't stage any shots, we won't ask you to stand in a certain place or do something for the camera, we'll capture it all completely naturally, just the way it happened, whilst making sure everyone looks great along the way!

We don't ask anything of our couples on a wedding day aside from a small request to wear one of our tiny, discrete microphones for your vows and speeches. Aside from that you can forget we're there and get on with celebrating an incredible day with your family and friends, safe in the knowledge that every moment will be captured in film and creatively edited to preserve your memories forever.

Watch Dominique shooting London Street Photography in Fujifilm's X-E4 commercial

Here at York Place we love to work with companies and creatives that share our values of innovation and customer service. One company whose products we love and use every day are Fujifilm who we were proud to represent as official X-Photographers.

The Fujifilm team joined Dominique as she kept her skills sharp with some street photography using one of her favourite cameras - the Fujifilm X-E4. As Dominique explains in the video, taking street photography in interesting cities like London is how we practice between weddings and teach ourselves to look beyond the obvious moment to find hidden moments and opportunities.

Wedding photographs reach the finals of the London Street Photography Festival

We were extremely proud to have two of our wedding images be listed as finalists in the prestigious International London Street Photography Festival. As a street photography competition there is no category for weddings but the street inspiration of our photographs of life captured at weddings was clear for the judges to see.

We could not recommend Dom and Liam enough! We had the most amazing day and a huge amount of that was down to them being the best photographers ever! We absolutely loved having them photograph our day. They were so thoughtful, enthusiastic, subtle and just basically great fun to be around! It was like having a couple of friends there, which is exactly what we wanted.

Every photo managed to capture our wedding day so perfectly. Looking through our photos now we have a story of the whole day, showing us things that we never realised were even happening. We have had so many people come to us and tell us the photos are the best they have seen and we are so proud of this.

We absolutely love the work of Dom & Liam. We have had so many comments on our wedding photos – people just absolutely love the style. They managed to capture all the happiness, joy and laughter of the entire day. Not only that but they made us and all our guests feel so comfortable – they literally blended in and worked their magic. We highly recommend their work – you won’t regret booking them!
