The Arrival: Coming Together on the Town Hall Steps
The communal energy of the day kicked off with an immediate sense of momentum right on the iconic stone steps of The Old Marylebone Town Hall. The atmosphere built beautifully as family and friends began to assemble, but the excitement went up a gear when a vintage Routemaster bus pulled up right outside the venue, spilling a massive wave of laughing guests onto the pavement. Framing the ecstatic greetings, quick hugs, and pre-ceremony nerves against this grand civic backdrop created a stunning, high-energy prologue to the main event.
The Narrative: The Bus Journey and the Maida Vale Takeover
The ceremony inside the hall was beautifully framed by a live string quartet, personal readings by close friends, and a genuinely joyous atmosphere. But the absolute highlight for any documentary photographer was what happened next. Instead of a standard migration, everyone boarded the classic London Routemaster bus for a tour through the city streets toward Maida Vale.
Riding along with them, cameras down at eye level, allowed us to capture the real, unforced spirit of the afternoon-the popping corks, the swaying balance of guests in the aisles, and the shifting London light flooding through the windows. It was during this journey that the city and the celebration aligned perfectly for one of our absolute favourite frames of the day: capturing the iconic outline of Big Ben perfectly framing one of the grooms through the glass of the moving bus windows, surrounded by the laughter of the crowd. It’s the kind of spontaneous, layered composition that you can never plan or stage; it just has to be observed and caught in a split second.
Arriving at The Elgin, the visual tone shifted into the warm, atmospheric depths of a classic London pub. Because the venue sits right on a bustling high street with no dedicated outdoor space, the entire reception took place indoors, spread across two distinct floors.
Rather than restricting the day, these close quarters forced a beautiful density of interaction. The afternoon meal and speeches took place on the first floor, followed by a brilliantly personal pub quiz led by a close friend that had the entire room leaning in, laughing, and competing fiercely. As night fell, the energy spilled back down to the ground floor, where a DJ took over, the cake was cut, and the dancefloor completely ignited alongside a packed photobooth.
