Modern Documentary Storytelling for Rustic & Historic Venues

Rustic Venues, Modern Stories.

Barn Wedding Photography by York Place Studios

Barn weddings have a unique charm. The old beams, the textures, the sense of history—they create a backdrop that is both grand and intimate. But getting married in a rustic setting doesn't mean you have to settle for 'traditional' wedding photos.
We bring a modern, documentary eye to rustic venues. Whether it's a restored 18th-century tithe barn or a modern industrial farm conversion, we look past the obvious angles to capture the real energy of your party against the texture of the building.

Cinematic Light in Rustic Spaces

Barns are famous for their lighting challenges: bright shafts of sunlight piercing through wooden slats during the day, and deep, warm darkness at night.

Most photographers try to 'fix' this by flooding the room with flash, which kills the atmosphere. We do the opposite.

We use the contrast. We play with the shadows. We use the available light—candlelight, fairy lights, and firepits—to create images that feel rich, warm, and true to the mood of the venue. Our footage and photos don't just show what the barn looked like; they show what it felt like to be there.

There’s no words good enough to describe how brilliant York Place Studios were! We knew we didn’t want conventional wedding shots; we wanted everyone at our wedding to relax, enjoy the day and be themselves, and that included ourselves! Looking at Dom & Liam’s work online and then talking to them before booking confirmed for us that they were the right choice, and the service they provide is second-to-none. The pictures are beautiful, funny, and heartwarming, you can tell that this team care about the people they are photographing and the story they are telling. Their art is amazing. The moments they have caught of our friends, family and all our loved ones will stay with us forever!

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s perfect. We love the moody, warm atmosphere of a barn at night. We use fast lenses and cameras with exceptional low-light capabilities to capture the candlelight and the fairy lights without needing to use flash that would destroy the ambience.

Barns are actually great for wet weather! They usually have high ceilings and interesting architectural features (like mezzanines) that allow us to get creative with angles even if we can’t go outside. We’ll capture the cozy, huddled atmosphere of a rainy day perfectly.

This is where our editing style shines. We grade our images to embrace the warmth of the wood and the tungsten lights, rather than trying to force it to look white and sterile. This results in a rich, cinematic look that suits the venue perfectly.

Yes, absolutely.

We approach details in three ways. First, we capture the ‘safe shots’—clean, beautiful records of your styling and flowers before the guests arrive.

Second, we shoot documentary details—capturing your table settings as they are lived in, with guests laughing across them.

Finally, we love creating artistic ‘still lifes’ from unusual details. We use light and composition to turn everyday objects into images that have their own power and feeling, rather than just being a record of “things.”

Barns can sometimes be echoey due to the high ceilings. We counter this by using individual lavalier microphones on the speakers during the ceremony and speeches, ensuring we capture crisp, clear audio regardless of the room’s acoustics.

Yes. We have shot in barns all over the country, from the Cotswolds to Yorkshire. Every barn has its own character and light, and we love the challenge of discovering a new one.
