The Anticipation of Human Nature

Beyond the moment: Using experience and history to document the unscripted.

As documentary photographers, one of the most vital skills we’ve developed is the ability to anticipate a moment before it occurs. This isn’t magic; it is the result of tapping into our own life experiences and using that knowledge to understand human behavior. Whether it’s knowing from hundreds of weddings that a champagne bottle might overflow – and that someone will instinctively try to catch it with their mouth – or sensing a shift in the room’s energy, we keep shooting because we understand the “why” behind the “what.”

The Narrative: The Advantage of History.

In the case of Michaela and Tony’s wedding, we had an extra layer of intuition. A few years ago, we had the pleasure of capturing Michaela’s sister Emma’s wedding. Returning to document this family felt like coming home. Not only were we drawing from our own experiences, but we were using our previous knowledge of these people – their quirks, their delightful mannerisms, and their personalities – to add a richer thread to the tapestry of our photographs.

The Setting: A Private Home in the Welsh Hills

The wedding was held at their family home, tucked away in the vibrant hills of Wales. Private home weddings have a unique soul; they are unpretentious, personal, and filled with a specific kind of freedom. Michaela and Tony’s day was a riot of colour, vibrancy, and fun. It was a joy to capture familiar faces alongside new characters in such a meaningful landscape.

The York Place Approach

Our documentary wedding photography approach relies on this blend of anticipation and connection. We don’t just photograph what people look like; we photograph how they react to the world around them. Thank you, Michaela and Tony, for inviting us back into your family’s story and letting us find the humour and heart in the hills of Denbighshire.

A Story That Continues

We love nothing more than returning to a family to tell the next chapter of their story. If you’re planning a celebration that is less about the "venue" and more about the people, the quirks, and the shared history of your home, we’d love to be there to anticipate the moments you’ll cherish.
