In the process of building this new look website over the last several months we’ve spent a lot of time considering our photographic style, thinking about photography in general and revisiting past weddings. One of the things we always find extraordinary in photography is how your feelings towards certain images can change. Whilst we rarely fall out of love with photographs, what we have found during this process is that we have discovered so many more ‘forgotten’ images that have become fast favourites. Images that we certainly didn’t dislike at the time, we just for whatever reason felt slightly differently about them than we do now. Sometimes that’s a sign that we’ve evolved as photographers and recognise slightly different qualities in an image than we did at the time we took it, sometimes it’s because our focus has slightly shifted and now we see an image in a whole new light, and sometimes it’s because these photographs are not just memories for our couples, they’re our memories too.
Whilst our style of photography is an observational one, that doesn’t make us invisible! We don’t just witness other people’s weddings, we’re part of them. We feel the atmosphere, we experience the day just as a guest would, and just as different memories and different moments will become important to our couples over time so they will to us. Whether our own image or someone else’s our appreciation of a photograph, or indeed of any piece of art, is coloured by our own experiences and those are always evolving and changing. What mattered most to us the moment we first looked at a collection of images may no longer be the same thing that matters years, months or even weeks later. That evolving nature of photography is one of the things that most excites us about the art form – you never truly know your best images until you allow a little time to pass.
Michelle & Stephen’s wedding is definitely one that has evolved for us. It’s actually not so long since this amazing pair got married at London’s Town Hall Hotel back in the summer of last year but the images we wanted to share on the blog were actually prepared some time ago and sat there waiting for the new website to be ready to share them.
Whilst many of those originally chosen images remain part of the selection below, even in the short time since we first selected them so many additional favourites have emerged – images that we have a whole new appreciation of purely from our recent reflections on what it is we love about photography. Michelle & Stephen’s wedding was full of incredible moments and the glamorous pair absolutely rocked it so it’s really no surprise that we have so many favourites. But the changing nature of what those favourites are is still surprising every single time.
We look forward to sharing more of our couple’s memories, and our own, more regularly on this, our new website.
